Australian artist Robert Fielding has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Hadley Art Prize for his work titled Landscape, which depicts stacked abandoned vehicles rendered in burnt red tones to contemplate a bygone era.[1] The prize carries a purse of $100,000, and the winning work has been acquired by Hadley's.[1]
The judging panel, comprising Abdul Abdullah, Judith Ryan, and Sarah Wallace, commended Fielding's distinctive approach to landscape representation.[1] Abdul Abdullah noted that Fielding employs "a very traditional mark-making process to tell a very contemporary and forward-looking story,"[1] while Sarah Wallace observed that the work "held memory and stories of Country, and travelling across Country."[1]
The exhibition of prize-winning and selected works will run from August 1-23 at Hadley's Orient Hotel in Hobart.[1] Among the selected artists is 19-year-old Alice Mannheim, the youngest artist in the exhibition.[1] Fielding's other works have also gained recognition: Tjintir-Tjintir is a finalist for the Archibald Prize, and Heritage Impact Assessment is a finalist for the Wynne Prize.[1]
