The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is investigating the financial dealings of NSW Reformers, a conservative Christian faction within the New South Wales Liberal Party.[1] During a public hearing, founding member Robert Assaf acknowledged that the faction's money had been used to cover personal expenses including a bachelor party, with members intending to repay the funds.[1] Assaf attributed the misuse to members being "immature and young" at the time, describing the faction's resources as an advance on personal spending.[1]
The inquiry is also examining fraudulent invoices routed through the lobbying firm Beckington and the flow of funds from banned donors.[1] Hotelier Michael O'Hara has been identified as an undisclosed donor whose contributions exceeded legal limits.[1] Text messages presented to the commission show Dallas McInerney discussing a request for ten thousand dollars from federal Opposition Leader Angus Taylor.[1] Assaf stated that any payment from Taylor "never happened" and said he did not recall any minister making donations to the faction.[1] Taylor has denied making any such payment.[1]
