India's strawberry industry is working to reduce its dependence on foreign varieties and establish itself as a major global producer. The Mahabaleshwar region in western India accounts for approximately 85% of the country's strawberry output, yet the sector has long relied on imported cultivars from the United States, Europe, and other established producers.[1]
Currently, India sources strawberry varieties entirely from established breeding programs in California, Florida, Italy, and Spain, where developers require 10 to 15 years to create high-quality cultivars.[1] To address this constraint, the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV) agricultural university has partnered with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to develop heat-tolerant strawberry varieties suited to India's climate.[1] According to Dr. Darshan Shashank Kadam, an assistant professor at MPKV, the breeding process could still require 10 to 15 years to yield results.[1]
Beyond varietal development, emerging agricultural enterprises are driving productivity gains through technological innovation. Berry Fresh Agrotech, founded by Ketan Yashwant Sodha, employs hydroponic methods while carefully controlling water supply—restricting each plant to 750 milliliters daily.[1] Tara Farms Fresh founder Nelson Sequeira has demonstrated that a single mother plant can generate between 20 and 30 to 40 daughter plants.[1] These advances are enabling farmers to explore new cultivation models: a Farmer Producer Organisation has announced plans to scale production from 25,000 plants per acre to 125,000 plants through five-tier vertical farming.[1]
Individual cultivators are also adapting their practices to market demands. Farmer Sheetal Danavle invests approximately $2,500 annually in strawberry cultivation and, following a failed hydroponic experiment during a cyclone in 2017, has shifted toward direct-to-consumer sales via social media.[1] These combined efforts—spanning scientific research, technological adoption, and entrepreneurial marketing—represent India's push to strengthen its position in global strawberry production.
