A 54-year-old mother, Kawsar Ahmad, and her 31-year-old daughter, Zeinab Ahmad, have pleaded not guilty to slavery-related offences in Melbourne Magistrates Court.[1] The allegations stem from their time in Syria under Islamic State control.[1] Kawsar Ahmad faces four charges: enslavement, possessing a slave, using a slave, and engaging in slave trading.[1] Zeinab Ahmad is charged with enslavement and using a slave.[1]
The pair returned to Australia in May from the Al Roj detention camp in Syria.[1] They are accused of unlawfully confining a Yazidi youth during their years living under IS rule.[1] The Ahmad family relocated to Syria approximately a decade ago.[1]
A direction hearing for the case in Victoria's Supreme Court is scheduled for August 21.[1] Zeinab Ahmad's defence lawyer, Grace Morgan, stated in June that her client holds a negative view of the Islamic State.[1]
