Japanese companies maintain a dominant position in semiconductor materials, according to a 2025 market share survey released by Nikkei Economics.[1] Shin-Etsu Chemical tops the silicon wafer sector with a 26.3% share, up 1 percentage point from the previous year, while SUMCO holds 17.8%, gaining 1.8 percentage points.[1] Combined, Japanese firms control 44.1% of the silicon wafer market, a gain of 2.8 percentage points.[1] In the photoresist field, Japanese companies occupy the top three positions with a collective 60.5% share, marginally increasing 0.3 percentage points from 2024.[1]
However, Japanese enterprises show limited presence in core memory chip sectors, where South Korean and American manufacturers dominate.[1] SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics each hold 34% of the DRAM market, tied for first place, while Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory has doubled its DRAM share to 6%, up from 3% in 2024.[1] For NAND flash memory, SK Hynix and Samsung together command 50% of the market, with Kioxia Holdings maintaining a 15% share, down 1 percentage point year-over-year.[1]
Beyond semiconductors, Japanese automakers face intensifying competition from Chinese competitors, with no Japanese enterprise ranking among the top five in the pure electric vehicle segment.[1] Toyota maintains a 12.3% overall automotive market share, while Honda's two-wheeler division saw its share decline to 36.3%, down 1.2 percentage points.[1] In shipbuilding, Japan shows modest growth, with Imabari Shipbuilding rising from sixth place to third with a 7.2% share, up 2.7 percentage points, though Chinese State Shipbuilding Corporation and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries lead the sector with 17.8% and 13.7% respectively.[1]
