Germany's Robert Koch Institute has released a report documenting a severe toll from extreme heat in 2026. As of July 19, heat-related deaths in the country have reached an estimated 9,800 people, surpassing the number recorded in any full calendar year since 2016.[1]
The majority of these deaths occurred during a prolonged heat wave in late June, when temperatures in many regions approached 40 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 41 degrees Celsius.[1] Elderly citizens have been disproportionately affected, with those aged 85 and older accounting for the highest proportion of fatalities.[1] While extreme heat rarely causes death directly, most heat-related deaths result from the combined effect of high temperatures and pre-existing conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases.[1]
The German Federal Environment Agency has projected that heat-related mortality will continue to rise.[1] By mid-century, Germany is expected to experience an additional 10 heat days annually.[1]
