A 98-year-old woman living alone in western Melbourne was discovered dead at her home after waiting nearly three hours for an ambulance following a fall early Friday morning.[1] The woman activated her medical alert system and called Triple Zero around 4:30 a.m., but despite multiple attempts by the dispatcher to contact her through the medical alert phone, the ambulance did not arrive until approximately 7:30 a.m.[1] Fire Rescue Victoria personnel found her deceased when they entered the residence.[1] Police have prepared a report for the coroner regarding the incident.[1]
The death underscores ongoing concerns about delays within Australia's emergency services system.[1] A 2023 parliamentary committee disclosed that at least 20 people have died while waiting for ambulances since 2020.[1] Between December 2020 and May 2022, 33 Victorian residents died due to emergency call response delays.[1] In response to these systemic issues, the 2022 budget allocated AUD 1.019 million to upgrade Triple Zero Victoria's telephone infrastructure.[1]
