The upcoming film Wicker will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival, featuring actor Alexander Skarsgard in a role unlike any other: a husband constructed entirely from wicker.[1] Directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the film showcases Skarsgard as a character brought to life through basketmaker magic, with his entire body crafted from interwoven willow branches.[1]
The transformation required an extraordinary technical undertaking by Weta Workshop, which spent 18 months developing an intricate prosthetic suit for Skarsgard.[1] The costume combines 3D-printed resin panels with visual effects to create the distinctive wicker appearance, incorporating components such as a mask, trousers, and sleeves.[1] The design process involved 360-degree photography, laser scanning, and silicone life casting to ensure authenticity and movement compatibility.[1]
Fischer described the viewing experience as seamless, stating that "when you watch this film, it feels like magic."[1] Wilson emphasized the filmmakers' commitment to subtlety in execution, noting, "We really wanted these moments to feel special but very subtle, so you're not constantly thinking about the VFX tricks."[1] Wicker will screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival from August 6 to 23, with a nationwide release scheduled for November 26.[1]
