An international climbing expedition of 10 people led by Nirmal Purja went missing on Broad Peak in Pakistan following an avalanche that struck Thursday at midday.[1] The 8,047-meter peak is located in Pakistan's northern region.[2] The team comprised climbers from multiple nations, including five Nepali mountaineers, as well as members from the United States, China, Oman, and Pakistan.[1][2] Purja, a former Nepalese Royal Marine, is a renowned mountaineer who summited all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just over six months in 2019.[1]
The Alpine Club of Pakistan is coordinating with authorities to mount a rescue operation, with efforts focused on organizing a helicopter rescue for Friday morning Pakistan time, pending weather conditions.[1] According to Karrar Haidri, vice-chair of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, "We are coordinating with the authorities and trying to arrange a helicopter rescue on Friday morning Pakistani time depending on weather condition."[1] The climbing team lost contact following the avalanche, prompting immediate mobilization of rescue resources by Pakistani authorities and the club.[2]
