The "blue light" indicator used in autonomous driving systems across Chinese vehicles may be prohibited due to non-compliance with existing standards and safety concerns.[1] The China Automotive Standardization Research Institute has identified misuse of the blue light, which poses safety risks, as the current national standard GB 4785—2019 does not regulate blue-colored lighting.[1] The standard, which took effect in 2020, covers white, yellow, red, and amber colors but makes no provision for blue.[1]
Over a dozen vehicle manufacturers have already integrated this feature into their models, spanning the entire price range from economy sedans priced at around 100,000 yuan to luxury SUVs worth millions of yuan.[1] Most vehicles sold in the Chinese market equipped with autonomous driving capabilities currently operate at Level 2 partial automation, classified as combined driving assistance systems.[1] For existing vehicles already equipped with the blue light, official remediation measures have not yet been announced, though the most likely solution would involve disabling or upgrading the feature through over-the-air (OTA) updates.[1] The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology projects that advanced autonomous driving functions will achieve large-scale market application by 2030.[1]
