The New South Wales government has committed $225 million to upgrade energy infrastructure in the South West Renewable Energy Zone, mere months after completing the Project EnergyConnect transmission line 1. The upgrades are designed to increase grid capacity to support planned wind and solar projects in the region 1.

Transgrid will undertake the upgrade work, which includes boosting capacity at the Dinawan substation and the Wagga Wagga transmission line from 330 to 500 kilovolts 1. The project is expected to begin in 2027 and will take two years to complete 1. Transgrid has already entered into a project development agreement with the Australian Energy Regulator 1.

The new investment follows the completion of Project EnergyConnect, which reached a final cost of $3.6 billion, representing a 56 percent increase over its initial $2.3 billion budget 1.
