Major Collin Welch, a 40-year-old officer in the U.S. National Guard, pleaded guilty Tuesday to forging government documents and embezzling approximately $54,000 in public funds to maintain a secret second marriage [1]. Welch, who was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, initiated a relationship with a Mongolian woman in 2019 while serving there [1]. The two married secretly in Mongolia in 2022, but Welch subsequently deceived both the woman and her daughter by bringing them to the United States in 2024 while concealing his existing marriage [1].
To facilitate this deception, Welch fabricated multiple government documents, including letters from immigration authorities, Social Security cards, and Department of Defense correspondence [1]. When he remarried in Virginia, he falsely claimed he had never been married before [1]. The charges were filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. [1].
