Australia's federal government has implemented a series of childcare safety measures over the past 12 months, starting from legislation passed on July 31, 2024.[1] These reforms have introduced multiple mechanisms to strengthen oversight and standards across early education centers, including powers to cut funding to non-compliant facilities, expanded mandatory safety training requirements, enhanced recruitment screening procedures, and pilot CCTV programs.[1]
By June 2026, the government had exercised its funding reduction authority on one center and issued warnings to 115 centers as part of enforcement efforts.[1] On the training front, more than 99 percent of educators have completed the first phase of mandatory safety training, with Education Minister Jason Clare indicating that educators have six months to complete the next phase.[1] In August 2025, state and territory ministers agreed to develop a national early childhood worker register.[1]
However, the effectiveness of these measures remains a matter requiring further assessment and refinement.[1] According to analysis of the reforms, additional time will be needed to fully evaluate their impact, while improvements in workplace culture, increased parental engagement, and better center design are identified as areas requiring continued attention.[1]
