Tanning beds are experiencing a renewed surge in popularity among young people, driven partly by social media trends, even as medical evidence increasingly links their use to serious skin cancer risk.[1] Research from Northwestern University found that tanning bed users face a melanoma risk nearly three times higher than non-users, with DNA mutation rates in users more than double those of non-users.[1] Despite these findings, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration withdrew a proposed rule in March 2024 that would have prohibited anyone under 18 from using tanning beds, a regulation initially proposed in 2015.[1]
The health implications are substantial. Tanning beds can emit ultraviolet radiation at levels exceeding the sun's by more than tenfold, and using them before age 20 increases melanoma risk by 47 percent.[1] According to Dr. Pedram Gerami, "You only need like two or three (mutations) in the right place for it to turn into a melanoma."[1] The United States is projected to diagnose over 100,000 new melanoma cases by 2026, with approximately 8,500 deaths attributed to the disease.[1]
The regulatory landscape reflects growing concern, though progress remains uneven. California became the first state to ban minors from using tanning beds in 2012, and more than a dozen states have since followed suit.[1] However, a 2025 survey by the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that more than one in five young people prioritize achieving a tan over protecting their skin, indicating a significant gap between medical guidance and consumer behavior.[1]
