Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed Turkey's interest in participating in a new Lebanon security framework after the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) concludes its mandate at the end of the year.1 During Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's visit to Ankara, the two leaders discussed cooperation on post-conflict recovery and regional security matters.1 Erdoğan stated: "After the withdrawal of the current international force, Turkey wants to take part in all initiatives that will be launched to support security in the region and ensure Lebanon's sovereignty."1
Erdoğan pledged support for Lebanon's economic recovery and military strengthening, while also urging Lebanon to enhance dialogue with Syria.1 France and Italy have similarly indicated their willingness to participate in successor operations to UNIFIL.1
The security initiative comes against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions. The Israel-Lebanon conflict, which began on March 2, has resulted in more than 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, with hundreds of thousands displaced.1 A framework agreement brokered by the United States on June 26 committed Israel to withdrawing from occupied territories while Lebanon pledged to disarm Hezbollah.1 Israeli military forces currently maintain control over significant portions of southern Lebanon.1
