Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed Turkey's interest in participating in a new Lebanon security framework after the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) concludes its mandate at the end of the year.[1] During Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's visit to Ankara, the two leaders discussed cooperation on post-conflict recovery and regional security matters.[1] Erdoğan stated: "After the withdrawal of the current international force, Turkey wants to take part in all initiatives that will be launched to support security in the region and ensure Lebanon's sovereignty."[1]
Erdoğan pledged support for Lebanon's economic recovery and military strengthening, while also urging Lebanon to enhance dialogue with Syria.[1] France and Italy have similarly indicated their willingness to participate in successor operations to UNIFIL.[1]
The security initiative comes against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions. The Israel-Lebanon conflict, which began on March 2, has resulted in more than 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, with hundreds of thousands displaced.[1] A framework agreement brokered by the United States on June 26 committed Israel to withdrawing from occupied territories while Lebanon pledged to disarm Hezbollah.[1] Israeli military forces currently maintain control over significant portions of southern Lebanon.[1]
