Aziz Abdul, a 25-year-old heavyweight boxer from Uganda and grandson of former dictator Idi Amin, has declared his ambition to claim gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and crown himself "the new king of Scotland."[1] Abdul will face England's Damar Thomas in a heavyweight bout scheduled for Thursday morning at 6:15 a.m. AEST.[1]
The Ugandan fighter stated his intentions boldly, saying: "If I win the gold medal, I will be the baddest man in the Commonwealth, the baddest man in Glasgow, the new king of Scotland."[1] Abdul, who has never met his grandfather, credited Amin as inspiration for his fighting approach, planning to employ "Ringo boxing" tactics to defeat his opponent.[1] Amin himself declared himself king of Scotland in 1976, decades after seizing power in Uganda on January 25, 1971, when he overthrew President Milton Obote.[1]
