The disaster is expected to worsen as temperatures are forecast to reach 35–40 degrees Celsius beginning Wednesday, with the heat wave persisting through at least Sunday.1 The intensifying weather threatens to hamper firefighting operations at a critical moment. The Spanish government has declared the affected areas disaster zones as fires remain active and uncontrolled.1 Prime Minister Sánchez stated that "the climate emergency is worsening year after year, and we need to stand together,"1 while Madrid's regional leader Díaz Ayuso characterized the situation as "the largest natural disaster in Spanish history."1
