Spain is grappling with a severe wildfire crisis that has forced more than 70,000 people to evacuate their homes over the past week.[1] In the Madrid region alone, over 56,500 residents have been displaced, while an additional 27,797 have been ordered to remain indoors as a precaution.[1] The fires have affected approximately 77,000 hectares (190,000 acres) across the country, with the Avila region experiencing one of Spain's largest wildfires in recent history, consuming more than 50,000 hectares.[1] Four municipalities remain under lockdown, and twelve additional areas have been evacuated.[1]
The disaster is expected to worsen as temperatures are forecast to reach 35–40 degrees Celsius beginning Wednesday, with the heat wave persisting through at least Sunday.[1] The intensifying weather threatens to hamper firefighting operations at a critical moment. The Spanish government has declared the affected areas disaster zones as fires remain active and uncontrolled.[1] Prime Minister Sánchez stated that "the climate emergency is worsening year after year, and we need to stand together,"[1] while Madrid's regional leader Díaz Ayuso characterized the situation as "the largest natural disaster in Spanish history."[1]
