A 16-year-old lifeguard rescued a 10-year-old boy from dangerous surf conditions at Seabright beach in Santa Cruz, California, approximately 60 miles from San Francisco, on Saturday.[1] The boy, Nathaniel Rai, was caught in shallow water and swept into the ocean by a strong wave, pulled out approximately 15 yards into the sea amid 10-foot waves.[1]
Ryder Williams, the lifeguard, rushed into the hazardous conditions to retrieve the child.[1] Williams described the difficulty of the rescue, stating: "After the first wave, I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard."[1] The boy's father, Sumit Rai, praised Williams' bravery, saying: "He ran into that water despite those conditions that are deadly."[1] Nathaniel sustained no serious injuries and only had sand in his lungs; he was cleared by medical professionals and released to go home.[1]
The rescue caught the attention of President Trump, who pledged to bestow a "high civilian honor" upon Williams and invited him to the White House.[1]
