General Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, has warned that videos shared by American soldiers stationed in the Middle East through their mobile phones could be exploited by Iran to assess the effectiveness of attacks, potentially leading to casualties.[1]
In a letter dated July 28, Cooper cautioned that Iran can obtain nearly real-time information about strike effectiveness by searching through news reports and social media posts containing photographs and videos captured by troops.[1] He specifically warned that "the direct and inevitable consequence of this open-source intelligence could manifest in American military personnel casualties and civilian casualties in Gulf nations that have been attacked."[1]
As a consequence of these security concerns, the U.S. military is considering requiring some personnel deployed to the region to surrender their phones.[1] Some American soldiers stationed in Jordan have already been informed that their mobile devices will be confiscated within the coming days.[1]
