Thousands of migrants, predominantly from Morocco, have surged across the border into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, overwhelming local reception facilities and prompting urgent calls for emergency intervention.[1][2] Regional government leader Juan Jesús Vivas demanded that Madrid declare a state of national emergency and deploy military forces to secure the frontier.[1][2]
Between 1,500 and 2,000 people arrived in Ceuta over the past ten days,[2] comprising primarily young men alongside women and children.[1] The influx represents approximately 2 percent of Ceuta's total population.[2] Migrants attempted to enter the enclave by circumventing breakwaters or scaling perimeter fences,[2] with hundreds now sleeping in streets as immigration reception centers reached capacity.[1] Vivas warned that the reception infrastructure was completely overwhelmed,[1] with approximately 1,000 people waiting outside temporary accommodation centers.[2] "By the hour, the situation becomes more difficult," Vivas stated.[2] The current crisis echoes a similar surge in May 2021, when more than 8,000 people entered the region within two days.[2]
