The Taipei City Government's plan to invite a Shanghai delegation to attend a giant panda welcome ceremony has been curtailed following objections from Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council over political concerns.[1] The original delegation of 18 people from Shanghai was reduced to 13 after the council determined that inviting certain officials raised united front work concerns.[1] The Taipei City Government has not formally submitted an application for the remaining attendees.[1]
The Mainland Affairs Council objected specifically to the inclusion of personnel from Shanghai's Taiwan Affairs Office, the deputy secretary-general, and official media representatives, citing the potential for political manipulation through these channels.[1] According to the council, exchanges between zoos should involve only professional staff members and should not include officials engaged in united front activities.[1] City council member Liang Wen-chieh supported this position, noting that given current cross-strait tensions and the Chinese Communist Party's pressure tactics against Taiwan, it would be inappropriate to invite personnel involved in united front operations.[1]
The two giant pandas are scheduled to arrive at the Taipei Zoo on June 6, 2026.[1]
