As a sweltering heat wave grips Europe, Prague Zoo is deploying tons of ice cubes to help its animals beat the extreme temperatures.[1] The polar bears Eluet and Gregor are among the beneficiaries, enjoying the frozen blocks in their outdoor enclosure as temperatures are forecast to reach 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit).[1]
The zoo has been providing ice to its animals for the past two years as part of its response to increasingly severe heat events and climate change.[1] Zoo spokesperson Filip Mašek explained that "the bears cool off with it and at the same time it's an enrichment of their life in the zoo."[1] The cooling measure extends beyond the polar bears; otters, elephants, and parrots also benefit from the ice provision.[1] The two polar bears were born in Nuremberg 16 years ago.[1] The current heat wave comes as the Czech Republic's all-time temperature record stands at 41.9 degrees Celsius (107.4 degrees Fahrenheit), set on June 28.[1]
