At 72 years old, Vini Reilly, the founding member of post-punk band Durutti Column, has released "Renascent," the group's first studio album in 16 years and their 21st recording overall.[1] The album marks a remarkable comeback for Reilly, who suffered a series of ischemic strokes after 2010 that left him unable to walk, play guitar, or retain memories.[1] Through dedicated retraining, Reilly has regained his ability to perform, with compassion serving as the central theme of the new work.[1]
The recording process began in 2017 and initially took place in Reilly's kitchen, reflecting both the intimate and challenging nature of his recovery journey.[1] Reilly's longtime collaborator, 86-year-old drummer Bruce Mitchell, has remained with the band since Durutti Column's second album, continuing to support the project through this latest chapter.[1] The album has garnered recognition from contemporary artists, with Frank Ocean having sampled Durutti Column's 1980 track "Sketch for Summer" on his 2016 song "Pink + White," and Harry Styles among those who regard Reilly as an influential figure.[1] Reilly has also managed recurring episodes of clinical depression since 1972, adding another layer to his perseverance in returning to recording.[1]
