An AP-NORC poll conducted from July 23-27, 2024, reveals shifting American attitudes toward the ongoing conflict with Iran and President Trump's handling of the situation.[1] Trump's approval rating on Iran policy has fallen to 28 percent, down from 34 percent the previous month, while roughly two-thirds of American adults believe a war with Iran would not be worth fighting.[1] The survey was conducted as the United States and Iran had recently paused escalatory attacks after a two-week period of heightened tensions.[1]
Support among Republicans for Trump's Iran approach has also weakened, declining from approximately 71 percent in June to around 61 percent currently.[1] When asked about potential military actions against Iran, only about one-fifth of American adults favor continued military operations, while roughly three-tenths prefer to pause and pursue a ceasefire.[1] The conflict, which began on February 28, has claimed the lives of 18 American service members.[1]
A substantial 72 percent of American adults consider preventing increases in domestic oil and gas prices "extremely" or "very" important.[1] The poll surveyed 1,165 adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.[1]
