Veteran trainer Les Bridge holds high hopes for Columbus ahead of the horse's appearance in Saturday's 1500-metre benchmark 72 handicap at Rosehill.[1] Columbus, a $1.5 million yearling purchase, recorded his maiden victory on July 14 at Newcastle following three spring starts.[1] The son of Dundeel out of Fastnet Rock mare Tides will be ridden by James McDonald and is currently the $2.20 TAB favourite.[1]
Bridge characterized Columbus as a horse that "has been a bit of a slow starter, but he's been going good at the moment."[1] The trainer believes the colt's best racing lies ahead, stating "I think he'll run 2000m, I think that's his distance," suggesting Columbus has potential to develop into a competitive middle-distance performer.[1] In the same programme, Bridge also has another runner in the sixth race with Aye Aye Captain, quoted at $4.[1]
