Twenty-three-year-old jockey Siena Grima has secured the Sydney apprentice premiership with 34 winners, finishing four victories ahead of defending champion Braith Nock.[1] The achievement makes her the fourth female jockey to claim the title since 2004, following Kathy O'Hara (2004–05), Winona Costin (2014–15), and Rachel King (2017–18).[1] More significantly, Grima is now the first female jockey in history to contend for an apprentice double championship.[1]
Working under the guidance of senior jockey Darren Beadman and trainer Chris Waller, Grima has demonstrated exceptional reliability and dedication. Beadman remarked that "she hasn't given us any trouble—sometimes having an apprentice is like running a childcare centre, but she hasn't missed a single day."[1] Grima's apprenticeship concludes in January 2028, during which time she retains a two-kilogram weight allowance.[1]
Looking ahead, Grima will contest at Rosehill racecourse on Saturday, with her best opportunity coming in the Congratulations Siena Grima Handicap, where she is scheduled to ride Existential Bob.[1]
