A $10 million mixed-use development proposal on William Street in Perth has been approved by Western Australian planning officials despite local opposition.[1] The eight-storey project at 441 William Street, developed by Skypacts Property Resources, required planners to grant two additional storeys beyond the six storeys permitted under the city planning framework in exchange for community benefits.[1]
The Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel voted 4:1 in favour of the proposal, with City of Vincent councillor Nicole Woolf casting the sole opposing vote.[1] The development will comprise six one-bedroom apartments and three three-bedroom apartments, along with nine residential and twelve commercial car parking spaces.[1] As part of the approval conditions, the developer agreed to upgrade streetscaping by converting car parking spaces in the adjacent William Street reserve into improved street amenities.[1]
Residents and representatives of a neighbouring mosque voiced concerns about the project's impact. Mohammad Illias raised alarm about increased traffic pressure on what he described as an already narrow street, noting that the mosque hosts hundreds of worshippers on Fridays.[1] Robert Piper, another nearby resident, expressed the permanence of the decision, stating: "Once this is done, you can't undo it."[1]
