Australia's Northern Territory government and the owner of Darwin's largest homeless shelter have failed to reach a lease agreement, putting more than 220 adults and 130 children at risk of displacement.[1] The YiSSA shelter has been ordered to cease accepting new residents this week, with all current occupants required to vacate by October 11.[1]
The impasse stems from a significant valuation gap between the two parties. The Northern Territory government offered 3 million Australian dollars to acquire the infrastructure, but Ausco Modular, the building's owner, counter-offered between 8 million and 12 million dollars.[1] Ausco Modular is owned by Modulaire Group, a subsidiary of Brookfield Corporation.[1] While the government has pledged that no one will be left on the streets, residents remain anxious about their future accommodation prospects.
The closure threatens an already strained system, with over 300 people currently on waiting lists for shelter, including 89 children.[1] Yvette Park, chief executive of Yilli Housing Aboriginal Corporation, has stated that substantial funding would be required either to establish alternative facilities or to continue negotiations with the property owner.[1]
