The World Intellectual Property Organization released findings on July 14 showing that SoftBank Group topped the global rankings for generative AI patents with 2,985 filings disclosed between 2014 and 2025.[1] Six of the ten leading patent holders are Chinese enterprises or institutions, including Tencent and Baidu.[1] The surge in generative AI innovation is evident in the filing trends, with more than 56,000 generative AI-related patents disclosed in 2024 and 2025 alone, exceeding the cumulative total from the preceding decade.[1]
Major technology companies secured notable positions in the rankings, though their patent volumes remain substantially below SoftBank's lead.[1] Alphabet, Google's parent company, registered 1,083 patents to rank seventh, while Microsoft filed 865 patents to place ninth.[1] In contrast, OpenAI disclosed only 35 patents globally during the period analyzed.[1] SoftBank's strong position in generative AI innovation is further underscored by its internal competition initiative, which had accumulated over 260,000 ideas by January 2026.[1]
