The pipeline is losing approximately 10 million liters of water daily due to severe leaks [1]. Repairs were scheduled to commence this weekend but have been delayed after landholders demanded compensation of 1.6 million Papua New Guinean kina [1].
Water PNG, the utility company responsible for the pipeline, had previously paid the landholders 1,600 kina for burial ceremonies and 5,000 kina for archaeological excavations [1]. The blockade has created significant uncertainty around the repair schedule. Meckles Poya stated that the obstruction "puts all closure preparations in an uncertain state" [1]. Foxie Kaeaka, speaking on behalf of the landholders, said "we have been working with Water PNG...what we want to demonstrate is that we have a problem and you have not resolved our problem" [1].
Comprehensive repairs to the water system are estimated to cost approximately 700 million dollars [1], while the Papua New Guinean government currently owes Water PNG more than 80 million dollars in unpaid water bills [1].
