Traditional landholders from the Behori Clan have erected blockades preventing critical maintenance work on a water pipeline that supplies Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea's capital, with over 50 percent of its water 1. The pipeline is losing approximately 10 million liters of water daily due to severe leaks 1. Repairs were scheduled to commence this weekend but have been delayed after landholders demanded compensation of 1.6 million Papua New Guinean kina 1.

Water PNG, the utility company responsible for the pipeline, had previously paid the landholders 1,600 kina for burial ceremonies and 5,000 kina for archaeological excavations 1. The blockade has created significant uncertainty around the repair schedule. Meckles Poya stated that the obstruction "puts all closure preparations in an uncertain state" 1. Foxie Kaeaka, speaking on behalf of the landholders, said "we have been working with Water PNG...what we want to demonstrate is that we have a problem and you have not resolved our problem" 1.

Comprehensive repairs to the water system are estimated to cost approximately 700 million dollars 1, while the Papua New Guinean government currently owes Water PNG more than 80 million dollars in unpaid water bills 1.
