Hanno Sauer, an associate professor of philosophy at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, has written a new book exploring humanity's moral evolution over the past 500 years.[1] Titled "The Invention of Good and Evil: A World History of Morality," the work examines the underlying evolutionary narratives behind transformations in human ethics throughout this period.[1]
Sauer, who specializes in ethics, metaethics, and political philosophy at his institution, will bring his ideas to Australian audiences in August through a series of public engagements.[1] He is scheduled to appear at the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne on August 20 as part of the Fifth Estate lecture series, and will participate in multiple panel discussions at the Sydney Festival of Dangerous Ideas from August 20–30.[1] In an interview about his research, Sauer described the past as resembling "a zoo," indicating he would not be interested in time-traveling to medieval England or ancient Rome.[1]
