Glen Hansard, the acclaimed Irish musician known for his work in film and music, has died at age 56 following a motorcycle accident.[1] His career spanned decades, beginning when he left school at 13 and took to street performing on Dublin's Grafton Street.[1] Hansard gained international recognition through his role as Outspan in the 1991 film The Commitments,[1] and later achieved further prominence as part of the musical duo The Swell Season alongside Czech actress Marketa Irglova.[1]
The film Once, released in 2007, marked a significant milestone in Hansard's artistic legacy when the accompanying song "Falling Slowly" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.[1] Beyond his entertainment career, Hansard remained deeply committed to charitable work throughout his life, volunteering at soup kitchens for Dublin's homeless population beginning at age 15.[1] He became known for organizing annual Christmas charity concerts on Dublin streets, bringing together musicians including Bono and The Edge.[1] In 2022, Hansard married poet Maire Saaritsa and had a son.[1]
