China's National Automotive Standardization Technical Committee is undertaking work to standardize the installation and use of blue indicator lights used in autonomous driving systems, commonly known as "blue lights."1 These lights do not comply with GB 4785-2019, the national standard for automotive external lighting and light signaling devices, and pose several safety concerns.1
The blue lights create glare that can distract other road users and impair their vision.1 Additionally, the lights have been associated with risky driving behaviors, as other motorists may attempt to cut in front of vehicles or follow them closely based on the signal.1
To address these issues, China has announced a ban on the use of blue lights in newly certified vehicle models effective July 27, 2026.1 The standardization committee is currently working on revising GB 4785 standards under project number 20262535-Q-339.1 Internationally, the UN/WP.29 working groups on lighting and light signaling (GRE) and automated and connected vehicles (GRVA) are also conducting research on the technology.1
Geely Automobile has stated it will strictly comply with national regulations and await further requirements.1
