On July 30, hundreds of migrants from Morocco attempted to swim to Ceuta, a Spanish territory.[1] Spanish authorities reported that over 1,500 migrants, including both adults and minors, had arrived by sea in recent days, overwhelming the reception facilities.[1] According to Juan Jesús Vivas, the leader of Ceuta's local government, the reception centers have reached full capacity.[1]
Spanish Coast Guard and rescue services recovered approximately 117 migrants from the water, while Moroccan authorities also rescued dozens of people from the sea.[1] The majority of migrants attempting the crossing were Moroccan nationals, with a smaller number of Algerian citizens among them.[1] Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska characterized the situation as "extraordinary and exceptional."[1]
The mass crossing attempt follows a recent ruling by Spain's Supreme Court that migrants arriving by sea cannot be immediately returned across the border and must instead be afforded proper legal procedures.[1]
