Republican Senator John Cornyn is threatening to obstruct a Senate Judiciary Committee vote on Todd Blanche's nomination as attorney general unless the Justice Department provides written assurances regarding a tax settlement agreement with former President Donald Trump.[1] Blanche, who is currently serving as acting attorney general, was scheduled for a committee vote on Thursday, but the nomination now faces the risk of delay.[1]
Cornyn has demanded guarantees clarifying the scope of Trump's tax audit exemption agreement and addressing concerns about a proposed "anti-weaponization fund."[1] The Justice Department announced in June that it was halting efforts to advance the fund, which had been proposed at $1.776 billion.[1] According to Cornyn, the department has refused to provide the written assurances he is seeking, stating: "They know what they need to do but they simply refuse to do it."[1] Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has aligned with Cornyn's position on this matter.[1]
