The Caribbean Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday that the United States extradition proceedings against Azruddin Mohamed, leader of Guyana's second-largest parliamentary party, and his father Nazar Mohamed can continue.[1] The two men were indicted in Florida on gold smuggling and money laundering charges and had challenged the extradition process through the regional court, but their legal challenge was rejected.[1]
According to the US Treasury Department, the pair allegedly smuggled more than 10,000 kilograms of gold into the United States while evading more than $50 million in taxes.[1] Azruddin Mohamed was elected as opposition leader in January and leads the second-largest party in Guyana's Parliament.[1] Both men have remained out on bond since their arrest last year.[1]
Justice Winston Anderson described the case as "a complicated matter" in the ruling.[1] Nazar Mohamed stated that the 256-page judgment leaves room for further action, saying, "Based on what lawyers say, all is not lost as yet. ... We will be fighting all the way."[1]
