However, this success in distributed solar has not translated to utility-scale development, creating a significant bottleneck for the nation's economic transformation [1].
Currently, Australia operates approximately 12 gigawatts of utility-scale solar capacity connected to the national electricity market [1]. Despite the lower costs of solar technology overall, utility-scale solar installations in Australia remain roughly 1.5 times more expensive than comparable projects in China [1]. To address this gap, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is investing in robotics, automation, and prefabricated solar arrays to enable low-cost large-scale deployment [1].
ARENA has established the "30-30-30" target, aiming to achieve 30 percent efficiency at a cost of 30 cents per watt by 2030 [1]. According to ARENA CEO Darren Miller, "as we move towards 2050, nothing is more important to Australia's economic advantage than very cheap electricity manufactured at scale in Australia" [1]. Miller envisions deploying 1,000 gigawatts of solar capacity across remote regions of Australia [1], supporting emerging industries including green steel, hydrogen production, and critical mineral processing [1].
