Geothermal energy company Zanskar acquired the Lightning Dock geothermal power plant in New Mexico in June 2024, taking over a facility that had become underperforming due to rapidly declining groundwater temperatures.[1] Before the acquisition, the plant's water temperature had dropped from its design specification of 310°F to 250°F, severely limiting its output.[1]
Rather than abandoning the site, Zanskar applied advanced geological modeling and modern drilling techniques to develop a new production well at a different location.[1] The new well reaches 8,000 feet deep—more than three times the depth of the original 2,500-foot production well—and began operating in May 2025.[1] One year after startup, the well maintained a flow rate exceeding 4,000 gallons per minute, enabling the plant to return to full capacity with power generation more than double the previous output.[1] The facility, which operates at 15 megawatts capacity and supplies electricity to approximately 11,000 American households, represents a successful turnaround for what had been considered a marginal asset.[1]
CEO Joel Edwards characterized the achievement as transformative, stating: "This technology has changed people's perception of Lightning Dock's potential and that of all the hydrothermal assets across America."[1]
