France's Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday the expulsion of Ksenia Fedorova, a Russian media commentator, from the country, accusing her of spreading Kremlin propaganda and false information on French television and radio with the intent to destabilize public order.[1] Fedorova, who previously headed the French division of Russia Today (RT), remained in France after the broadcaster was banned following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and subsequently became a commentator for billionaire Vincent Bollore's media group.[1] She has appeared regularly on the CNews television channel, Europe 1 radio station, and in Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.[1]
According to the Interior Ministry's statement, Fedorova acted as "a channel for disinformation campaigns orchestrated by Russian authorities" intended to "undermine France's public order."[1] The ministry has placed her under house arrest pending her departure.[1] Her lawyer, Emmanuel Piwnica, contested the characterization, stating that "Ksenia Fedorova is a journalist" and announced plans to appeal the expulsion order immediately.[1] President Emmanuel Macron had previously expressed similar sentiments in 2017, declaring that "when media spreads defamatory lies, they are no longer journalists. They are tools of influence."[1]
