Firefighting crews across southwestern France are engaged in an intense struggle to contain a major wildfire ravaging the Gironde region. The blaze, which has raged for approximately one week, has forced the evacuation of over 220,000 residents and tourists at its peak as temperatures soared to around 40 degrees Celsius.[1][2] The fire has destroyed an area roughly four times the size of Paris,[2] with approximately 50,000 hectares consumed.[1]
The emergency response has mobilized extensive resources, including more than 2,200 firefighters and over 20 aircraft deployed from across France, ranging from Brittany in the north to cities in the south including Marseille and Lyon.[1][2] Canadian aircraft have also joined the effort, each dropping more than 1,000 gallons of water per sortie.[1] Ground crews and local volunteers have supplemented aerial operations to combat and contain the flames.[1]
The Gironde fire is part of a broader wildfire crisis engulfing southern Europe. France has burned over 1,160 square kilometers this year.[2] The situation in neighboring regions shows some signs of improvement, with approximately 20,000 people in Spain's Madrid region permitted to return home and 14,000 residents having restrictions lifted, though 10,000 remain under evacuation orders in the Castellón area.[2] Investigations have suggested that the Gironde fire may have been triggered when workers from power utility Enedis used brush-cutting equipment near high-voltage lines.[2]
