Myanmar's military-controlled courts have handed down lengthy prison sentences to nine activists for their participation in a December 2024 protest calling for an election boycott.[1] Eight of the activists, including prominent figure Htet Myat Aung, received 37-year sentences, while one activist was sentenced to 27 years.[1] The demonstrations took place in Mandalay on December 3, during which protesters urged the public to reject the elections, abolish military conscription laws, and secure the release of political prisoners.[1]
The activists were convicted under the country's election law and counter-terrorism statutes.[1] Myanmar's election law carries a maximum penalty of death.[1] More than 200 individuals faced charges under this law ahead of the December elections.[1] According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, over 31,596 people have been arrested since the 2021 military coup, with more than 14,000 remaining in detention as of this week.[1] One activist, May Hnin, stated: "A government that came to power through a fraudulent election will never be able to establish a federal democracy."[1]
