Researchers at Kobe University have discovered that Kikai, an underwater supervolcano off Japan, is accumulating new magma in its storage reservoir through seismic wave surveys.[1] The massive magma chamber, which produced the largest known volcanic eruption of the Holocene epoch approximately 7,300 years ago, is now receiving fresh injections of molten rock.[1]
The findings, published in Communications Earth & Environment in 2026, reveal that the magma currently beneath Kikai's caldera differs chemically from that which erupted millennia ago, indicating new material has recently entered the system.[1] A lava dome has been forming at the center of Kikai's volcanic crater for roughly 3,900 years.[1] According to Nobukazu Seama, a geophysicist leading the research, "This means the magma now present in the magma storage reservoir beneath the lava dome is very likely newly injected magma."[1] The study provides insights into the recharge cycles of supervolcanoes such as Yellowstone and Toba.[1]
