The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has issued a warning that heatwaves and droughts are endangering hydrangeas across southern England.[1] Since 2023, inquiries about drought and heat damage to hydrangeas have more than tripled, making them the most commonly affected plant from heat stress.[1] Hydrangeas have risen from seventh place to first among heat-damaged plants during the 2023-2025 period.[1]
Guy Barter, chief horticulturist at the RHS, stated that "hot, dry summers are bad news for hydrangeas, particularly Hydrangea macrophylla types."[1] In response to the threat, the RHS has conducted hydrangea trials at its Bridgewater Garden in Manchester from 2021 to 2025 and plans to relocate its hydrangea collection from Wisley Garden in Surrey to northern gardens in Greater Manchester and North Yorkshire, where climate conditions are more favorable.[1] For gardeners, the RHS recommends moving potted hydrangeas to semi-shaded locations during extreme heat, applying deep watering, and adding mulch as protective measures.[1]
