A U.S. federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement between AI startup Anthropic and thousands of authors and publishers whose works were allegedly used without permission to train the Claude chatbot. 12
Federal Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted approval to the agreement, which covers more than 482,000 books and provides meaningful relief to affected rights holders. 12 Under the settlement terms, authors and publishers will receive approximately $3,000 per title on average. 12 More than 91 percent of rights holders have already claimed their compensation. 2
The settlement addresses a lawsuit initially filed in 2024 by authors including Andrea Bartz, alleging that Anthropic used pirated books to train its AI model. 12 Plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson characterized the agreement as "the largest known copyright recovery in history." 12
Bloomsbury, the publisher behind the Harry Potter series, will receive millions in compensation as a beneficiary of the settlement. 2 The publisher has approximately 14,087 titles included in the agreement and expects to receive around $19 million (£14 million) along with affected authors, after deducting roughly 10 percent for legal fees and other costs. 2 Initial payouts are expected to begin in the second half of the current fiscal year. 2
Anthropic has maintained its position on the matter. 1 Deputy General Counsel Aparna Sridhar stated that "AI training on books constitutes fair use," representing the company's defense of its practices. 1
