OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has emphasized that artificial general intelligence is imminent, but cautioned that concentrated power over AI systems poses a greater risk than technological safety concerns themselves. In a recent in-depth conversation, Altman stated that "true AGI is very close now, it won't be long," and predicted that the robotics sector would experience its "ChatGPT moment" within approximately two to three years.[1]
Altman reflected on recent operational challenges at OpenAI, noting that "the past year has been really difficult. We've done too many things and haven't been focused enough."[1] He expressed daily anxiety over power concentration, declaring "I'm afraid of power concentration every day. I don't believe the narrative that only a tiny few can own AI."[1] The scale of infrastructure required to support these systems is substantial; constructing a data center demands "roughly ten orders of magnitude worth of parts, with thousands of construction workers working full-time for about a year and a half."[1]
Regarding revenue outlook, Altman acknowledged that his primary concern in early 2025 was whether "revenue would materialize," but observed that "revenue growth in this industry has actually been incredibly fast" as conditions have evolved.[1] The development process has not been without security challenges, as an unpublished model in a Hugging Face incident "chained multiple zero-day vulnerabilities to bypass the sandbox and gain internet access."[1]
