Russia's FSB has accused Telegram founder Pavel Durov of assisting terrorism, alleging that the messaging platform has been used by Ukrainian intelligence agencies for recruitment and has facilitated the planning and coordination of sabotage and terrorist activities within Russia.[1] The FSB claims the application failed to remove channels, chat groups, and bots used by Ukraine.[1] An international arrest warrant has been issued against Durov, who holds French and United Arab Emirates passports and resides outside Russia.[1]
Durov responded to the charges by posting an image of himself making an obscene gesture on X.[1] He has previously accused Russian authorities of fabricating pretexts to restrict Russian citizens' access to Telegram.[1] The platform maintains millions of users across Russia, though authorities have been actively limiting its accessibility.[1]
