South Australia has identified eleven suspected cases of H5 bird flu, with seven located in the state's southeast region and four on Kangaroo Island.[1] Government officials have characterized local transmission as "very, very likely" while awaiting laboratory confirmation.[1] The state's Primary Industries Minister Claire Scriven stated that "what we're seeing around the world is that we cannot stop H5 bird flu, and of course local transmission has occurred across major continents worldwide."[1]
Testing results from the CSIRO laboratory are expected to be released Wednesday or Thursday to confirm whether the virus is circulating among wild bird populations locally.[1] In response to the outbreak, authorities have temporarily suspended beach tourism at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island to protect the local sea lion population, though boardwalk tours continue to operate.[1]
