DJI's Pocket series has established a booming market segment that has now attracted major Chinese smartphone manufacturers into direct competition. The pocket gimbal category, which DJI pioneered, has evolved into a market valued at over 10 billion yuan and is projected to expand to several hundred billion yuan.[1]
DJI's dominance in this space stems from remarkable commercial success. The Pocket 3 has sold approximately 10 million units and generated over 2 billion yuan in revenue.[1] The company's latest offering, the Pocket 4, is priced at 2,999 yuan for the standard kit and 3,799 yuan for the full package.[1] However, this pricing has opened the door for competitors leveraging smartphone-derived imaging technologies. Xiaomi is targeting the sub-1,000 yuan segment, while vivo and OPPO are positioning themselves in the 1,500 to 2,500 yuan price range.[1]
The smartphone makers are moving rapidly into production. Vivo launched an internal project in late 2025 codenamed vivo Pocket and has committed to mass production by the fourth quarter.[1] OPPO's competing pocket gimbal, codenamed Fuyang, is also scheduled for fourth-quarter launch.[1] Honor is pursuing an even more aggressive timeline with its Robot Phone gimbal device, targeting third-quarter market entry.[1] These manufacturers are leveraging their self-developed chips and large-format sensors—technologies originally developed for smartphone imaging—to create competitive alternatives. Beyond hardware, they are attempting to establish integrated ecosystems spanning shooting, editing, and content distribution to lock in users.[1]
