Taiwan has suspended its spot market purchases of liquefied natural gas from Papua New Guinea in response to a diplomatic dispute over "One China" recognition.[1] The move follows Papua New Guinea Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko's announcement earlier this month that the country would close Taiwan's informal embassy in Port Moresby, citing adherence to its one-China policy.[1] Taiwan subsequently filed a formal protest and announced the halt to spot gas acquisitions, though long-term contracts remain unaffected.[1]
The suspended spot purchases represent approximately 500,000 tonnes of LNG every six months, valued at roughly USD 800 million at current market prices.[1] Taiwan's long-term contract with Papua New Guinea, which runs through 2030 and involves annual imports of 1.2 million tonnes of LNG, continues without disruption.[1] Taiwan officials remain present in Papua New Guinea, and the government has not yet taken action to expel them.[1]
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi publicly praised Papua New Guinea's decision, suggesting it could serve as an example for other nations.[1]
