An inquiry has been told that the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) conducted a nationwide campaign against construction giant BMD costing 61,652 Australian dollars, which included leaflet drops and advertising targeting the homes of company directors [1]. The campaign, which formally commenced in October 2023 and continued into 2024, involved the distribution of approximately 37,500 leaflets around directors' residences, a proposal put forward by national assistant secretary Andrew Sutherland in May 2024 [1].
The campaign appeared closely linked to efforts to obstruct BMD-Georgiou's contract on the Centenary Bridge project, which the joint venture had secured in December 2022 [1]. Union site visits escalated significantly during this period, averaging one to two visits per month in 2023 before increasing to multiple visits weekly by 2024 [1]. The Centenary Bridge project experienced cost increases of 54.5 million Australian dollars, with approximately 22 million dollars attributed to best practice industry conditions framework (BPIC) requirements [1]. A conflict incident occurred at the Centenary Bridge worksite on April 23, 2024, involving CFMEU organizer Hayden Turner-Davey and others [1].
